All About Braces
Comprehensive orthodontics is the most common treatment plan patients receive to correct dental problems.
At Righellis Orthodontics, we prefer to begin this process once all or most of the patient’s permanent teeth have erupted. This allows us to easily detect crooked teeth, gaps, and bad bites.
The objective of comprehensive orthodontic treatment is to correct each problem and achieve a functional bite while creating stunning aesthetics and balance.
Treatment will consist of braces added to the upper and lower teeth to correct any orthodontic problems with tooth alignment, jaw function, and bite.
Dr. Righellis uses the latest in orthodontic technology to straighten the permanent teeth and correctly align the patient’s jaw. The result – increased confidence and a beautiful smile you can be proud of.
When to Start
There are a number of variants to determine when would be the best time for comprehensive treatment to start. For example, Dr. Righellis and his team will:
- Consider the age and dental maturity of the patient
- Inspect the hygiene and periodontal health of the teeth, jaw, and gums
- Assess the orthodontic problems that need to be corrected
- Evaluate other restorative procedures to the teeth
- Review the patient’s general health
By 12 years of age, most children will have all of their permanent teeth in place, making this a good time to consult with an orthodontic specialist.
Orthodontists can usually take advantage of pre-teen and teenage growth spurts and high metabolisms to help shape the bite and teeth while reducing the overall treatment time and discomfort. However, because each person is unique, there is no set age to begin.
Dr. Righellis believes in personalized care to achieve superior results and happy patients. For some, he may recommend that treatment start right away. Those who are waiting on permanent teeth to erupt may need to wait. Ultimately, our goal at Righellis Orthodontics is for your individualized treatment plan to deliver the best possible outcome in the most efficient, beneficial, and cost-effective way.
The length of time needed to complete comprehensive orthodontic treatment will vary from each patient and will depend upon the severity of the problem we are trying to address. A simple crowding issue could be treated between nine to 18 months. More complex problems could take as long as 12 to 24 months.
However, all of this is dependent upon patient compliance and how the teeth and jaw respond to treatment . This means you must maintain your good brushing, flossing, and elastic wear habits – and keep your appointments with your orthodontist and dentist.
Dental braces will start with a complete dental examination by Dr. Righellis and his team. We will evaluate your teeth for signs of decay to determine if a cleaning by your dentist prior to beginning treatment is needed.
The diagnostic process will then include plaster models of your teeth and x-rays of your head to give us crucial information about the direction of bone growth, your bite, and to see if you have any missing, extra, or impacted teeth. This information will be very useful in helping us design a proper diagnosis and treatment plan.
The x-rays and plaster models of your teeth will allow us to properly evaluate your needs which we will discuss with you during your consultation. We will also cover treatment options, risks, and overall goals. In addition, we will address any concerns you may have and answer any questions.
